What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl Peroxide is a popular acne-fighting ingredient that is commonly found in many over-the-counter cleansers, spot treatments and gels in different concentrations to control varying breakout levels.

The main purpose of benzoyl peroxide is to kill the acne-causing bacteria underneath the skill in order to treat and prevent acne. In particular, it helps combat inflammatory acne (cystic acne, papules and nodules) rather than whiteheads or blackheads (which are more commonly treated by acids such as AHA and BHA). In addition to this, benzoyl peroxide can also help pores shed dead skill cells while controlling excess sebum production.

How to use Benzoyl Peroxide properly.

Depending on the concentration/strength of the product, most gels and face washes are suitable to be used once daily (preferably at night, before going to bed). If skin starts to become dry, try using the product less often.

Severity and consistency of product usage impact how long it takes the ingredient to show its effect. However, it typically begins to work within four weeks.

It should also be noted that benzoyl peroxide should not be used with other strong topical acne treatments or peeling agents as mixing different active ingredients in the same routine can increase skin sensitivity.

Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin are active ingredients which can be used with benzoyl peroxide in the same routine and may even help speed up the process of acne clearing.
